What is the The Art of Living?

What Is the Art of Living?

If you look up the definition of “art” in Merriam-Webster, you will find it defined--among other things—as “The skill acquired by experience, study or observation.” It is also referred to as “The conscious use of skill and creative imagination, especially in the production of aesthetic (aka) beautiful objects.”

While life and living are not objects but rather states of being, it is important to remember that skill and creative imagination are vital elements to making sure life--like skillfully crafted works of art--flows smoothly and effortlessly while allowing individual expression. This isn’t always easy because the canvas of life is one that is constantly changing with ripples and ruffles that sometimes make us say or do things that may be offensive to others, and we aren't always sure where we fit in the picture. And since it is not uncommon for people to have different habits for different environments--acting one way at home and then putting on their best “manners” when they go out in public--it is almost impossible to remember to use skill and creativity in social situations because we don’t make them part of our daily routines.

Offered by Helping Kids Together (HKT) as our Signature Series, The Art of Living embodies the philosophies of Emily Post--Respect, Honesty, and Consideration--and fuses them with HKT’s mission of promoting inclusion and diversity. Following our mantra “Leading by example. Learning by doing,” we present to kids the timeless gift of good manners and the importance of inclusion in today’s diverse society by instilling an appreciation of culture while outlining the values of self respect and individuality.

The Art of Living series teaches kids to recognize that great works of art don't just happen; they are created through keen observation and careful expression--and some take lifetimes to happen! It's never too late to learn how to fit in around others; it's never too soon either, and with that being said, The Art of Living covers hot topics for kids (and parents) from birth to college.

Designed to help kids feel comfortable socially and to teach them how to put others at ease, The Art of Living is interactive and covers important topics like The Golden Rule, proper introductions and first impressions, table manners, communication, out and about dos & don’ts, magic words and actions, and much, much more.

Using humor and a real world approach to social situations in daily life, the materials are presented to engage and leave a lasting impression!

Hopefully your young person will join us!

Scenario: You're browsing for a seat in the cafe at school and notice someone you've seen around alot but they always seem to be by themselves. They're alone again and you've got three other tables of friends calling for you. What do you do?
